Butterflies and moths have long inspired the folklore of many cultures. The Japanese believe a butterfly fluttering into one's home heralds the visit of a loved one, while some Native American tribes believe butterflies bring needed sleep and healing dreams. What inspires me most is how these winged creatures embody some of nature's most beautiful colors, patterns and playful magic. The butterfly's scaled wings play with light in a way that makes them look gem-like, unreal or otherworldly. Some of these species in their winged form only live a few days, making a chance sighting a treasured moment. With the use of naturally expired butterfly wings and precious metals, I hope to capture the jewel-like ethereal beauty these remarkable insects carry.
